Sit Smarter: A Practical Routine for Work & Play
The best sitting method is not “sit perfectly all day.” It is a repeatable way to get supported for the task in front of you, then give your body permission to change position before discomfort makes the decision for you.
Most people change their chair only after their neck feels tight, their hands start reaching, or they find themselves perched on the front edge of the seat. A better approach is to set the chair first, bring the work close, and switch posture when the task changes. The method below turns that idea into an eight-minute routine you can use at a home office, gaming station, or shared desk.
The sitting method in three moves
Set the body base
Feet, seat height, back contact, and armrest position establish whether you can sit back without working to hold yourself up.
Bring the task close
Keyboard, mouse, controller, and screen belong where you can use them without leaning, shrugging, or twisting.
Use more than one position
Focused input, reading, calls, and short breaks need different positions. Change deliberately instead of waiting to feel stiff.
1. Build the support position before you touch the desk
Begin with the chair away from the keyboard. Sit all the way back, not on the front half of the seat. Let the backrest meet your back; then adjust seat height until both feet have stable support. Your thighs do not need to be held rigidly parallel to the floor, but you should not be sliding forward because the chair is too high or because the desk forces the chair too far away.
Now set the contact points in order. First, place the lumbar pillow where it contacts the lower back rather than the middle of the ribcage. Second, raise or lower the headrest so it supports when you lean back—not so it pushes your head forward while you work. Third, set armrests low enough that the shoulders can stay relaxed and high enough to give the forearms a light rest when you are not actively typing.
OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance describes a practical target: head balanced over the torso, shoulders relaxed, elbows close to the body, feet supported, and back supported when sitting upright or leaning back slightly. It also emphasizes that there is no single position to hold all day. Use OSHA’s neutral-position guide as a reference, then adjust for your own proportions and task.
Use the chair’s range as a fitting tool
The black Dowinx QL-66B6 used in this guide has a 21.1–23.4 in seat-height range, a height-adjustable headrest, adjustable padded armrests, and a 90°–135° locking recline. Treat those controls as a sequence, not a checklist to maximize: seat height first, then back and head contact, then armrests.
If the chair has to be raised to put your elbows near keyboard height but that leaves your feet unsupported, solve the foot support rather than returning to a height that makes your shoulders work. OSHA makes the same practical recommendation: use a stable footrest when the desk and chair cannot both be set to support the feet and the work surface. See the chair-adjustment guidance.
Both feet are supported by the floor or a stable footrest. You are not hooking them around the chair base for stability.
You can sit back without immediately sliding forward. Lumbar contact feels low and supportive, not like a hard object in the middle of your back.
They remain low when the hands are on the input device. If they rise, the keyboard or armrests are likely too high.
It is a support for leaning back and reading—not a reason to push your head forward during precise screen work.
2. Create a work zone that does not pull you forward
After the chair is set, roll close enough to the desk that you can reach the keyboard without leaving the backrest. Place the keyboard directly in front of you and keep the mouse beside it. A common mistake is to align the monitor, then park the keyboard at the front edge of the desk. That makes the screen look correct while the arms are quietly forced into a reach.
For keyboard and mouse work, start with elbows near the torso, forearms roughly in line with the device, and wrists generally straight rather than bent upward, downward, or sideways. If the keyboard is too high, lower the input surface or chair; if that makes the feet lose contact, use a footrest. OSHA likewise recommends positioning the keyboard directly in front, keeping shoulders relaxed and elbows close, and maintaining wrists in line with the forearms. Read the keyboard-placement details.
Then move to the screen. Center the primary display, set the top at or slightly below eye level as a starting point, and adjust distance until you can read without leaning toward it. If you use two screens equally, center the seam; if one screen carries most of the work, put that one directly in front. For a laptop used as a main workstation, separate the screen from the keyboard with a stand and external input devices whenever practical.
3. Match the sitting position to the task
One chair can support more than one useful position. The key is to distinguish focused input from lower-demand work. For typing, editing, aiming, or detailed creative work, return near upright with the keyboard and mouse close. For reading, thinking, or a short call, a small recline can reduce the urge to perch forward—provided the screen is still readable without craning the neck. For a genuine break, stand and walk rather than trying to make a recline do all the work.
The QL-66B6’s 90°–135° locking recline and retractable footrest are useful for task changes, but the footrest is not a keyboard-work position. Extend it for a planned reading or recovery pause; retract it before precision work so you can roll close to the desk with both feet supported. This is a simple rule that prevents a comfortable lounge setting from slowly becoming an awkward typing position.
Make one adjustment, then test it for ten minutes.
Do not change the chair height, screen height, keyboard position, and armrests all at once. Adjust one variable, work for a short block, then notice what changed. This makes the setup repeatable instead of turning every discomfort into a full desk rebuild.

Good sitting is active in the quiet sense: you make small adjustments and stop asking one position to do every job. OSHA recommends changing working positions frequently, making small chair or backrest adjustments, stretching the hands and torso, and standing or walking periodically. Try a simple rhythm. At the end of a focused block, lean back slightly and look away from the monitor. At the next natural pause, stand to refill water, answer a message, or take a short walk. When you return, reset the work zone: feet supported, back in contact, keyboard close. You do not need a timer that interrupts every thought; you need a cue attached to something you already do, such as sending a file, finishing a match, or closing a meeting.
Your eight-minute sitting-method reset

Clear your primary work zone.
Put the keyboard, mouse or controller, and main screen in front of you. Move less-used items to the side so they stop determining your posture.

Set feet, seat, and back.
Plant both feet, sit fully back, and set seat height. Check that the lumbar pillow supports low back contact without forcing you forward.

Set armrests for the task.
For active input, they should not raise your shoulders or block your approach to the desk. For reading or calls, they can give the forearms a light rest.

Bring input devices close.
Move the keyboard and mouse together until you can use them without reaching or losing back contact. Check wrists and shoulders after a few minutes of work.

Tune the monitor last.
Center the primary display and adjust height, distance, and glare. Avoid using your neck as the monitor stand.

Choose the next change position.
Decide whether your next task needs focused upright input, a modest reading recline, or a standing break. That choice is the last step, not an afterthought.
